Traffic Safety. Such a benign phrase. Who could possibly have a problem with the idea? Crosswalks for the kiddies, speed limits - these are good things that make our communities safe and liveable, aren't they?
Well, if you haven't been paying attention, you may not have noticed. Even if you have been paying attention, you may not have noticed. The phrase "Traffic Safety" doesn't mean what it used to. It still shows up in lots of places - city budgets and websites, for example - but it now covers much more controversial territory than it did before. Traffic "calming" (I use the quotes to indicate another word that doesn't mean what you may think it means) is now part of the traffic safety family of double-speak phrases.
I drive to work because I don't get regular bus service where I live. Bus would take 2 hours a day versus 40 minutes for driving. I am sensitive to road construction and its' after-effects.
